The age of questions

I'm a 23 year old woman, who has recently completed her master's degree. I'm working quite happily with my family business that has taken me places in the past three years.

Most of my friends are either hitched,  engaged or hitched with kids. So its not surprising that I get asked a lot of questions about the next most apparently obvious thing in my life. Just a small background I thought I should perhaps give you before I shall reveal the questions that annoy me and make my blood boil.

The ten questions that I absolutely hate hearing are:

1. So, when are you getting married? (Uhm what?)

2. Oh your best friends are all married, perhaps you're next? ( It's their choice, not mine!)

3. Are you dating? Do you want to marry him? ( None of your business!)

4. You're 23 na? No plans of getting married soon? (So????)

5. You know Suresh's uncle's cousin's neighbour's daughter is getting married. (Get the underlying question there? )

6. Asked by those Aunties you rarely meet. "Oh beta, padhai khatam ab shaadi?"
(Studies over, now marriage? Is that all to life really? )

7. Why don't you do MBA if you're not planning on getting married? ( Yeah right! Please explain the connectivity of the two. Seriously I love the way things are right now.)

8. At a cousin's wedding, " You know the groom's brother is quite handsome. Do you want me to set you up? "( No thank you please! I'm here to attend a marriage, not start my own story)

9. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T WANT TO GET MARRIED NOW? (Ahem, what part do you not get?)

10. Mom: "Beta, what do you want to eat? " ( Okay I secretly love this one. I love the way mum is so blissfully different, not once has she ever questioned me about marriage. Thank God! But the one question she never fails to ask me is this one. *sigh* I love you mum, I really do. I can eat anything and everything that you will make for me. Even if it's pizza or boiled egg. You don't need to ask me at all! )

Ps: I have nothing against marriage, it shall happen when it happens. But I do hate it when everyone is hell bent on asking me the same question over and over again. I'm sick and tired of this question, the next person who asks me this shall have a curse from me, to be forced to suffer back to back Himesh Reshammiya songs running in their ears. I think you get the idea.

So, what questions annoy you?

This post is written for Indispire, ten questions that you hate.

  1. This is true that it will happen when it happens. Everyone has to undergo these kind of questions and sometimes they are just teasing you by asking you same over and over.

Don't worry once you get through this you will enjoy these type questions. Think you are on other side Just be with the other side

  11. I have read that list of similar questions long time before! :) And I used to be asked same questions. Are you married? What's your age? Do you have boyfriend? Do you plan to marry him? What will you do if he doesn't marry you? In my society it's very difficult to get married, because men like to be single till 37. So it's really very painful questions for me. And whatever answer you will give, it wouldn't be for your advantage. People like to judge, especially those who are getting married because it is a MUST do in their society!

Another annoying question is What's your salary. It's like they want to scan my life in numbers. My earning are high considering of salary rates in my country so I have nothing to be ashamed, but when I'm being asked this question I still want to say 'why, do you want to use my contacts when you will need money and need financial help? Sorry, but I'm not a bank'.

  12. Is marriage really such a massive question creator? But then if you're inundated with questions that just refer to marriage, I'm sure the questions deserve to be in your most-hated list!

  13. Lol! that makes me laugh. My sister is 26 and she is facing these questions these days. :D It's better to marry when one really feels like to and gets prepared to handle responsibilities of married life. These days it's more difficult to make a marriage successful. I hope parents and more than them uncles and aunties get this fact.

Yes it's a responsibility that one shouldn't take until they are mentally and emotionally prepared.

  25. Haha...really made me smile...sorry, I know how annoyed these questions make you feel...but it's the questions themselves!
Those universal questions every single female is asked at some time in her life.
Why does everyone assume we will never be fulfilled unless we are married...this is 2014...we want to choose our own life path - with or without a man at our side!!!
    A truly fabulous write! :)

  27. Parents are the only concerned people who have the liberty to ask questions related to marriage. Others have just a curiosity or they don't understand the relationship boundaries.

  29. The question of marriage is like a doom!

    ReplyDelete
  30. hahah.. loved it ..and the same question annoys me to that.. I come from that part of the world where girls should get married when they are 18 (non sense) and I m 22 and I seem to have crossed some age barrier (more nonsense, they say)....but blah blah blah.. you are right, it shall happen when it has to, pestering from people who have nothing to do with it doesn't help in anyway..:)
Good luck with finding peace from it all..:D Cheers..:)

  32. Ha Ha - There is a different set of questions married women are asked. And a different set people with children are asked I guess. All about moving to the next stage in life. Thankfully no one aks old people when they are planning to move to the next stage.
